Want to know why the Populist Right is rising in Europe?
For christ’s sake, I have genuine sympathies for real refugees (especially women and children), but what country could tolerate this level of lawlessness without serious political consequences? If you want to know why the Sweden Democrats, the Danish People’s Party, the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV), the Freedom Party in Austria, the French National Front and UKIP are soaring in popularity, then look no further.
A breakdown of law and order like this is what angers people and drives them to the right.
The million dollar question that hardly anyone in the media asks: how many of the people here are mere economic migrants? The solution cannot be to just continue to allow 1 million or 1.5 million people into Europe a year for the foreseeable future.
Happy to call myself post-Keynesian, but I don't find the left/right spectrum a very sure guide any more.
ReplyDeleteI like Dan Hannan's politics on Europe but his economic ideas are very simplistic.
I believe Hannan is a libertarian, no?
DeleteCertainly a liberal democrat. I think he has too much respect for Parliament to be a libertarian in the tradition of Mises.
DeleteI don't think his politics are too different from Keynes', remembering that JMK praised The Road to Serfdom.
But Keynes managed to reconcile liberal democratic views with the need for public investment.

DeleteAnyone got predictions for the elections this Sunday in France? The polls show the FN winning at least 2 regions. I hope they do actually, because that might wake the mainstream parties up, and it's not the presidency.
ReplyDeleteMany think they will do well. However, will either the French conservatives or socialists wake up and realise the EU and open borders are a disaster, or will they double down and cause further catastrophe?
